I have worked in the pet care industry for over 10 years and have been handling dogs all that time. I have a Rat Terrier - Archie and I am also currently babysitting my son’s dogs. Although my dogs at the moment are small to medium sized I have generally owned very large dogs. I train dogs in Wanneroo and the northern suburbs of Perth
I started out as a dog groomer and found myself advising owners with problem dogs how to fix the behavioural issues they had with their dogs. I had enormous success and found I particularly enjoyed seeing the bond between dog and owner become so much stronger when the dog stopped doing all the things that annoyed the owner, so after a lifetime of interest in dog behaviour I undertook formal studies in Dog Psychology to further understand what influences them to behave the way they do. I am a member of the following - the Association of Pet Dog Trainers Australia and Doggone Safe; as well as a Licensed Be Tree Presenter.
I love dogs and it often seems that owners with dogs that have behavioural issues have nowhere to turn to, a normal dog training club is no use as they don't specialise in behavioural problems. So I decided to help owners turn these dogs into perfect companions. I can help owners in the Wanneroo and Joondalup areas with all behavioural issues as well as general dog obedience training . Most behavioural issues are quite common and in fact from the dogs viewpoint, often quite normal.
I specialise in Cynopraxic Therapy - simply explained I help you build a strong bond with your dog. I do this by utilising the most modern and up-to-date scientific based dog training methods to get them to listen to you and to then correct all those unwanted behaviours that frustrate you so much. Everything that I do creates no stress or harm for your dog, I use gentle reward based methods for dog training. I base my training on a method referred to as LIMA - Least Intrusive Minimally Aversive. Simply put I will never endorse or use any training methodology that will cause pain, harm or stress to your dog.
Apart from dog training I am also a qualified people trainer and have been for over 30 years. I am able to link the expertise in both these areas and help owners by showing and explaining in easy to understand terms, why their dog is behaving in a particular way and the steps to undertake to adjust their dogs behaviour to one more suitable. I develop individual training plans for each situation and each dog, ensuring that the plans I develop are an easy fit to the owner’s lifestyle. I show the owner what to do with their dog and we then practice together until the owner is confident in the application. The owner then practices for a week or two and we get together again to check how things are going, to ‘fine tune’ the practice, and ensure that the behaviour adjustment has occurred.
Influences on my training style come from a number of people, Dr Ian Dunbar, Victoria Stilwell, John Bradshaw, Dr Sophia Yin, Grisha Stewart, Patricia McConnell, Jan Donaldson, Drayton Michaels, and many others. I subscribe to a reward based system as I find that this method enables a dog and its owner to have fun and enjoy training as well as building a strong mutual bond based on love and respect.
